OROCHIMARU SPOILER!

Orochimaru
OR

Naruto: Shippuden · Major Antagonist / Rogue Sannin

Orochimaru begins Shippuden with one overriding problem: the borrowed body he inhabits is failing before Sasuke is ready to become his next vessel. The rogue Sannin has spent years building hidden laboratories, experimenting on human subjects and pursuing techniques that might let him learn every jutsu without dying first. Sasuke eventually turns on him and absorbs him rather than surrendering his body. That does not keep Orochimaru gone forever. Fragments of him remain through curse marks and Kabuto's modifications, allowing Sasuke to revive him during the war. Orochimaru then helps Sasuke bring back the previous Hokage for answers about the village and the Uchiha. He remains dangerous, curious and morally grotesque, but no longer fits neatly into the role of the series' central villain.

Why These Three?

Tracking · Combat Support · Orochimaru Network Access

Sasuke does not recruit three interchangeable fighters. Suigetsu gives the group another dangerous combatant with knowledge of Orochimaru's world and his own reason to travel. Karin gives Sasuke the sensor he needs for a search built around locating people who do not want to be found. Jugo adds overwhelming force, but also joins because Sasuke is tied to Kimimaro, the person Jugo trusted most.
Why it worked
The useful part is the combination. Hebi can search, split up, survive contact with high-level enemies, and regroup without asking a village for intelligence or support. Sasuke has effectively built his own tiny rogue-nin network.
