Fahn was one of the Six Heroes who defeated the Demon King, but age has not erased either his strength or the compromises buried beneath his legend. He welcomes Parn after Princess Fianna is rescued and gives the young adventurer a more honest understanding of his father, restoring honor that Parn believed had been lost. Fahn's history with Emperor Beld makes the War of Heroes deeply personal. The two former comrades eventually meet in single combat, and Fahn falls to Beld's Demon Sword. His death closes one era of Lodoss and leaves younger figures like Parn and Kashue to decide what comes next.

Thirty years earlier, both men fought in the struggle that made them legendary. By the present day they have built very different answers for Lodoss. Fahn represents alliance, restraint and a kingdom trying to hold the island together. Beld believes unification by force is the only way to end its endless divisions.
That history is why their meeting on the battlefield feels less like a random king fighting a villain and more like the collapse of an old generation. Parn watches men he grew up hearing about prove that becoming a hero does not settle what kind of future a hero should build.

Why it matters
The War of Heroes is not just Valis versus Marmo. It is two old comrades reaching opposite conclusions about how Lodoss should be saved.
Fahn enters the duel with Beld knowing exactly who stands across from him. There is no revelation that the Dark Emperor was secretly a stranger to the old king. The tragedy is that Fahn and Beld understand each other and still cannot share a future.
Beld's strength wins the duel. Fahn dies in front of the armies and in front of Parn, who has spent much of the OVA trying to understand what honorable knighthood is supposed to look like. Fahn's death gives Parn no easy reward for choosing the 'right' side. Valis survives, but the man who embodied its resistance does not.

Parn's idea of heroism stops being inherited mythology here. He has to decide what the example of men like Fahn means after seeing that heroes can die and still leave unfinished work.
King Fahn's answer to Marmo is coalition rather than conquest. He sends Princess Fianna toward Alania, welcomes King Kashue of Flaim, and prepares Valis to resist Beld instead of trying to seize the whole island first. That difference matters because the OVA keeps putting rulers beside Parn so he can see several models of leadership at once.
Fahn is old, Kashue is younger and battle-tested, and Parn is still wearing his father's battered armor. The three men sit on different points of the same question: what does a warrior owe the people behind him? When Fahn eventually marches out, the answer is tragic but clear. A king who wants peace still has to stand in front of an army when peace has already failed.

The armies of Valis and Marmo finally collide in the battle that gives the war its name. Parn goes after Ashram, Deedlit is drawn into combat with Pirotess, and the battlefield becomes a knot of old grudges and new rivalries. At the center, Fahn calls out Beld and the two former comrades fight directly.
The OVA does not let the battle become a clean heroic victory. Fahn falls. Beld is then lost before Marmo can convert that victory into control of Lodoss. Both armies are left without the simple ending they expected, and Parn is left staring at the cost of legends settling their argument with swords.

What changed
After this battle, the old heroes no longer control the story. Parn, Ashram, Kashue and the survivors have to live with what the previous generation leaves behind.
Marmo's campaign expands from the southeast until the threat can no longer be treated as somebody else's border war. Ashram's forces crush Fortress Myce, Beld advances through Valis, and villages are burned specifically to force King Fahn into a decisive confrontation. The strategy works because Beld is not merely raiding. He is trying to break the political balance of the island and put Lodoss under one ruler.
Parn's journey keeps crossing the invasion at different scales. At Myce he sees what Marmo does to a fortress. On the road back to Valis he sees injured civilians. By the time the armies meet, the war is no longer background scenery for his adventure. It has become the thing deciding whether there will still be a Lodoss for his generation to inherit.

Beld survives his duel with Fahn, but he does not leave the battlefield as the uncontested ruler of Lodoss. Karla has spent the war watching for exactly that outcome. Once one side is close to becoming too powerful, she intervenes and the Dark Emperor dies before Marmo can turn his battlefield victory into total domination.
Ashram takes up Beld's Demon Sword and carries Marmo's pride forward, but Beld's death breaks the invasion's momentum. The result is exactly the kind of balance Karla's Balance claims to protect: neither Valis nor Marmo gets everything, while ordinary people absorb the cost.
