Primary Protagonist / Young Knight of Lodoss
Record of Lodoss War
Lodoss wears its tabletop role-playing roots openly. The party explores ruins, crosses kingdoms, argues around campfires and survives encounters that feel like they could have begun with somebody rolling dice. But the OVA gives that familiar structure weight through Deedlit and Parn's growing bond, Ghim's search for Leylia, Ashram's loyalty to Marmo and Karla's determination to preserve a balance no matter how many lives it costs.
Released across thirteen OVA volumes from 1990 to 1991, Record of Lodoss War became one of the defining fantasy-anime imports of the VHS era. Its detailed armor, painted backgrounds and straightforward high-fantasy imagery made it an easy recommendation to Western viewers already familiar with Tolkien, Dungeons & Dragons and fantasy role-playing games.
Central Park Media brought the OVA to North America on VHS and later DVD, helping Lodoss become one of those titles that circulated through specialty shops, convention rooms and fan recommendations long before streaming made old anime easy to find. For AnimeHistory, it is a compact piece of exactly the era the archive is trying to preserve.

Marmo, the Dark Island
Beld's Marmo
Marmo, the Dark Island
SPOILER!The island also contains forces older and darker than Beld's army. Wagnard pursues Kardis beneath the political war, and the dragon Narse answers to the buried power of Marmo. After Beld dies, those deeper ambitions become harder to contain.
Emperor Beld
SPOILER!His power is both personal and symbolic. Beld is a formidable swordsman, carries the Demon Sword, commands Marmo's armies and inspires absolute loyalty in Ashram. When he defeats Fahn, it looks for a moment as though his version of Lodoss may actually win.
After Beld
Ashram, the Black Knight
SPOILER!What separates Ashram from Wagnard is loyalty. Ashram wants power, but his ambition is tied to the man he served and to a warrior's idea of rule. Wagnard treats Marmo, Ashram and everyone around him as material for a resurrection ritual. Their alliance can never remain stable.
Pirotess and Ashram
SPOILER!The relationship becomes clearest during the battle with Shooting Star. Pirotess saves Ashram more than once, and Ashram finally responds to feelings he had kept buried beneath duty. The moment lands because it happens in the middle of a mission for Beld's legacy, just as Ashram begins to understand that loyalty to the dead can cost him the living person beside him.
Wagnard's Ambition
Wagnard
SPOILER!He is dangerous because every temporary alliance is only useful to him until the next piece of the ritual is in place. Ashram seeks the Scepter to rule. Wagnard wants it because it can amplify the power he needs for resurrection.
Wagnard Takes the Scepter
SPOILER!The theft changes the purpose of the Scepter completely. In Ashram's hands it would have been a tool of conquest. In Wagnard's hands it becomes part of the machinery for reaching Kardis.
The Resurrection of Kardis
SPOILER!The scale of the ritual is visible above and below ground. Narse rises to guard Marmo. Undead creatures keep returning. Mycen arrives to fight the dark dragon. At the altar, Ashram attacks Wagnard for his own reasons while Parn is trying to save Deedlit.
