HIMURA KENSHIN SPOILER!

Himura Kenshin
HK

Rurouni Kenshin · Protagonist

Former hitokiri. The Battosai. The most feared assassin of the Bakumatsu, the man who killed more than anyone wants to count for the cause of the Meiji Restoration. And then the war ended and the new era arrived and Kenshin disappeared into it carrying a sakabato, a reverse-blade sword that cannot kill. That choice is the whole series. Not whether Kenshin can fight. He clearly can. Whether the vow holds when the world starts making very good arguments for breaking it. The cross-shaped scar on his cheek comes from two different sources. The show gets to that in its own time. Slight, red-haired, violet-eyed, addressed constantly as a wanderer because that is what he decided to become when the killing stopped.

Kuzu-ryūsen (Nine-Headed Dragon Strike)

Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū · Nine Sword Directions at Once Open →
Kuzu-ryūsen attacks the nine basic directions of Japanese sword combat in what appears to the opponent as one simultaneous rush. A normal defense can answer one line of attack; Kuzu-ryūsen overwhelms that logic by presenting all nine before the opponent can choose.
Why it matters
Hiko uses the technique as the wall Kenshin must cross while learning the succession art. It represents Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū at its most mechanically complete, which is exactly why the final technique cannot simply be "Kuzu-ryūsen, but harder."

Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki

SPOILER! Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū Succession Technique · Battōjutsu Open →
Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki is Hiten Mitsurugi-ryū's succession technique: a battōjutsu strike that breaks the usual footwork rule by stepping forward with the left foot as the blade is drawn. That extra commitment produces extraordinary acceleration. If an opponent survives or blocks the first strike, the displaced air and the user's rotation create the opening for a second attack.
Why it matters
Hiko will not simply teach Kenshin the footwork. Kenshin has to discover the state of mind that makes the step possible. The technique only becomes available once he stops treating his own survival as less important than everyone else's.
