GON FREECSS
GF
A wide-eyed, wild-haired 12-year-old boy from Whale Island who enters the terrifyingly lethal Hunter Exam with a singular, bizarre goal: to figure out what makes being a "Hunter" so incredibly great that his father, Ging, chose it over raising his own son. Gon is the absolute engine of the story, combining an untamed, nature-tuned sensory radar with an unblinking, borderline-psychopathic stubbornness. While his boundless optimism routinely charms the cold-blooded killers around him, the 1999 adaptation masterfully accents the dormant, terrifying intensity hiding just behind his innocent eyes.

Open page →Gon Freecss vs. Hanzo
Open →Hunter Exam Final Phase · Result: Gon Loses on the Scoreboard, Wins the Room
A ten-year-old with no formal training goes toe to toe with a professional ninja and shinobi-trained assassin, loses on points, and earns Hanzo's open respect anyway. THE BREAKDOWN: this fight happens before Nen even enters the picture and still tells you everything about how the show measures a win, effort and character over the actual scoreboard.
Gon Freecss vs. Hisoka (Heavens Arena Rematch)
Open →Heavens Arena Arc, Floor 200 · Result: Delayed by Mutual Agreement
Hisoka wants this fight badly enough that he's willing to wait years for Gon to actually be worth fighting, which tells you more about Hisoka's priorities than any villain monologue could. THE BREAKDOWN: this is less a completed match than a promise the show is setting up to cash in later, and everything Gon learns from Wing between here and Yorknew exists specifically to make that eventual fight mean something.

The most balanced type on the chart, equally useful for offense and defense, which is exactly why it's the type a kid who grew up wrestling giant fish with his bare hands turns out to have.
