The young swordsman at the center of Record of Lodoss War, Parn begins his journey wearing his late father's armor and carrying more determination than experience. He wants to restore his family's honor, but the quest quickly grows beyond that personal goal as Marmo's invasion pulls him into the War of Heroes. Parn is impulsive, idealistic and sometimes painfully obvious about what he thinks a hero should look like, yet that sincerity is also why people trust him. His bond with Deedlit becomes the emotional spine of the OVA, while encounters with Fahn, Kashue, Ashram and Beld steadily force him to grow into the kind of knight he originally only knew how to imitate.

She does not march under Marmo's banner, does not want Beld to conquer Lodoss, and does not become a hidden ally of Valis. She believes Lodoss survives only when no single power becomes strong enough to dominate the island.
That belief lets her help one side and ruin it later without seeing herself as inconsistent. She can interfere with Princess Fianna, speak calmly with King Kashue, steer the war, and then turn on Beld when his victory threatens the balance she wants. To Karla, kingdoms, kings and adventurers are pieces on a board that has to remain permanently unsettled.

Why it matters
The Grey Witch makes 'balance' frightening. Her goal sounds cautious until the OVA shows how much suffering she is willing to preserve in order to maintain it.
Kastuul is the ruined civilization Karla points to when she explains why she fears concentrated power. The OVA does not need a long history lecture to make the point. Karla shows Parn the remains of the place she remembers and presents its destruction as proof that a civilization can become too powerful for its own survival.
Whether Karla's conclusion is justified is another matter. She takes one historical catastrophe and builds an endless political doctrine around it. Instead of asking whether Lodoss can learn from Kastuul, she assumes every attempt at unity will eventually become the same disaster.

Kastuul explains Karla without excusing her. Her fear has a history. Her answer to that fear is still to manipulate whole populations.
Ghim reaches Karla before the rest of the party can turn the confrontation into a safer plan. He asks for Leylia back. Karla refuses. When Parn and the others arrive, the fight becomes less about defeating Karla's magic outright and more about reaching the circlet that holds her possession together.
Ghim takes the punishment necessary to get close enough. His final strike tears the circlet from Leylia and frees her, but the effort costs him his life.

The Breakdown
Ghim does not overpower Karla in a conventional duel. He wins the objective. Leylia is freed because he keeps moving toward the one thing that matters even when Karla's magic is killing him.
Karla believes a united Lodoss is more dangerous than a divided one. Her model comes from the destruction of Kastuul: when too much power gathers in one place, catastrophe follows. So she works to prevent any kingdom, ruler or faction from becoming strong enough to control the island.
The problem is the price of her solution. Balance does not mean peace. It means wars that end before one side can win, rivals kept strong enough to threaten one another, and generations of people living inside conflicts Karla considers useful. Parn rejects her because she treats suffering as an acceptable maintenance cost.

Karla is not lying about wanting Lodoss to survive. The horror is that she has decided survival justifies keeping the island permanently unstable.
The party's victory over Karla lasts only long enough for them to understand the rule they missed. Leylia is free, but Karla was never tied permanently to Leylia. Woodchuck disappears after the battle, and the final reveal shows the Grey Witch continuing through him.
It is a cruel ending for a character who spent much of the journey surviving through instinct, cynicism and opportunism. Woodchuck finally belongs to a group that treats him as more than a prisoner or thief, only to become the next body used by somebody else.

The party has learned how Karla's possession works, but not how to end Karla herself. The Grey Witch leaves the first half of the OVA defeated in one body and alive in another.
