Details & Synopsis
Keiichi Morisato is a technically gifted but chronically unlucky college student whose life changes when a wrong telephone number reaches the Goddess Relief Office. Belldandy appears in his room and offers him one wish. Convinced that the whole thing must be a prank, Keiichi asks for a goddess like her to stay with him forever. The wish is accepted, and the supernatural Ultimate Force makes backing out impossible.

The five-episode OVA turns that setup into a compact romantic fantasy about two people trying to make an impossible relationship feel ordinary. Belldandy brings warmth and patience into Keiichi's life, while her sisters Urd and Skuld arrive with very different ideas about what the couple needs. Love potions, magical system bugs, motorcycle races and divine rules keep intruding on college life, but the emotional center never moves far from Keiichi and Belldandy choosing each other again and again.

Produced by Anime International Company and released from 1993 to 1994, this was the first animated adaptation of Kosuke Fujishima's long-running manga. Its final two episodes create an OVA-specific climax around Belldandy's recall to Heaven, giving the short series a complete romantic arc even though the larger franchise continued for decades.

Offered one wish, he impulsively asks for a goddess like her to stay with him forever, and the wish activates the Ultimate Force that keeps them together. Keiichi is promptly expelled from his men-only dorm, so the new couple searches for somewhere to live and finds an abandoned temple. Their fragile new routine is complicated almost immediately when Keiichi's younger sister Megumi arrives in town.

Belldandy's older sister Urd emerges through the television and decides that subtle encouragement has failed, bringing a love potion along on a beach trip. The potion falls into the wrong hands and creates a mess involving Sayoko before Belldandy finally answers Keiichi's feelings with a kiss of her own. Urd's interference earns divine punishment, leaving her stranded on Earth with them.

Belldandy's younger sister Skuld comes to Earth, furious that Belldandy has not returned to Heaven and convinced Keiichi is the reason. Keiichi is meanwhile building a motorcycle for a drag race after a rival club raises the stakes and treats Belldandy as part of the prize. Skuld sabotages the machine in an attempt to break the couple apart, but Belldandy's faith in Keiichi survives the interference. Keiichi wins the race and Skuld is forced to accept that her sister's attachment to him is real.

With Belldandy's recall imminent, Urd and Skuld attempt an Ultimate Magic Circle while Keiichi races to finish the ring he promised her. The magical crisis unlocks Keiichi's buried memory of meeting Belldandy as a child, when the two made a promise that Heaven later erased because it violated divine rules. Understanding why their bond has always felt familiar gives the present separation new meaning. The recall is finally rescinded, and Keiichi is able to give Belldandy the ring as the OVA closes on the relationship they have chosen to keep.

The Wish and the New Life

A Wish That Starts as a Joke

Keiichi reaches the Goddess Relief Office by accident, and even after Belldandy appears in front of him he is convinced the situation has to be somebody's elaborate joke. When she offers him one wish, his answer is less a carefully planned romantic confession than a lonely young man testing an impossible situation: he asks for a girl like Belldandy to stay with him forever.

The joke becomes binding the moment Heaven accepts it. Ultimate Force activates, Belldandy stays, and Keiichi immediately discovers that getting exactly what he asked for is going to rearrange his entire life.
Why it matters
The OVA starts its romance with an accident, but it does not leave the relationship there. The rest of the five episodes are about Keiichi and Belldandy repeatedly choosing what the wish first forced into existence.

The first practical consequence of Keiichi's wish is losing his dorm room. Women are not allowed there, and the force maintaining the contract is not interested in making an exception for college housing rules. Keiichi and Belldandy end up at an abandoned temple, turning what could have been a one-scene supernatural gag into a shared domestic life.

The temple matters because the OVA keeps returning to it as the place where the impossible becomes ordinary. Meals, repairs, arguments, visiting siblings and divine emergencies all happen in the same rooms. By the end, Belldandy is not simply a goddess staying near Keiichi because of a wish. She is part of a household that the two of them built around that wish.

Five Months Without Saying It

By the beach trip, Keiichi and Belldandy have been living together for months and still have not clearly defined what they are to each other. That hesitation is exactly what drives Urd crazy. She arrives convinced that the couple needs a push and treats romance like a mechanical problem that can be fixed with enough interference.

The important moment is not Urd's scheme. It is Belldandy answering Keiichi's feelings herself after the scheme falls apart. The relationship moves forward because she chooses to respond, not because Urd successfully engineers the right mood.
What changed
The wish created proximity. Episode two starts proving that proximity and affection are no longer the same thing.

Myth: Keiichi and Belldandy only stay together because the Ultimate Force makes them.

The Ultimate Force can enforce the condition of Keiichi's accepted wish, but the OVA repeatedly separates that supernatural rule from the couple's actual feelings. Keiichi works for Belldandy, worries about losing her, tries to give her a meaningful ring and promises to wait even when Heaven is preparing to take her away. Belldandy chooses him just as deliberately, including when remaining close to him starts causing dangerous system failures.

The contract explains why the relationship begins. It does not explain why both of them fight to preserve it when preserving it becomes difficult.
Why it matters
The romance works because the supernatural premise becomes less important than the ordinary choice underneath it.

Once Belldandy's Recall gives the relationship a deadline, Keiichi decides he wants to leave Belldandy with something real. He takes multiple jobs and pushes himself to exhaustion so he can buy her a ring before she is sent back to Heaven.

Megumi helps point him toward the idea, but the effort is entirely Keiichi's. He is not trying to find a magical loophole or make a stronger wish. He wants to make a simple human promise visible, which is exactly why the ring becomes tied to the much older promise hidden in his memories.
Why it matters
For a story full of divine systems and impossible magic, the emotional object at the center of the ending is something Keiichi earns with ordinary work.

The Childhood Promise

The final episode reveals that Keiichi and Belldandy's connection did not truly begin with the wrong telephone number. They had met when Keiichi was a child and made a promise to one another, but divine rules made that promise unacceptable and Keiichi's memory of the meeting was sealed away.

That forgotten promise is bound to the same place where the later System Bugs gather. When the final crisis breaks the seal and Keiichi remembers enough to act on what was left unfinished, the recall can finally be reconsidered.
What changed
The OVA recontextualizes its entire romance. The first episode still matters, but the feeling that Keiichi and Belldandy recognized something in each other is no longer just romantic coincidence.
