RED RIBBON ARMY //
Open page →Goku Is Not Trying to Save the World
Open →The Four-Star Ball keeps pulling him deeper
That distinction keeps the arc feeling like Dragon Ball. Jingle Village leads to Muscle Tower. A broken radar leads back to Bulma. An underwater Dragon Ball leads into General Blue. Each local problem keeps revealing another layer of the same organization.
One boy enters the headquarters
By the time they arrive, the disaster has happened to Red Ribbon.
Android 8 Refuses the Job He Was Built For
Open →Hatchan · A Red Ribbon weapon that will not murder for them
That creates one of the earliest important android ideas in Dragon Ball: being manufactured as a weapon does not automatically determine what someone wants to be. Android 8 is powerful enough to hurt Goku, gentle enough not to, and brave enough to turn on General White when White attacks his friend.
General Blue Is the Army at Its Most Competent
Open →Submarine pursuit · Psychic restraint · Dragon Radar theft
He still cannot account for Dragon Ball being Dragon Ball. The chase ends in Penguin Village, where Arale casually hits him hard enough to send him flying.
The Army finally finds someone stronger than Goku
That matters immediately. Tao kills Bora, defeats Goku and leaves him alive only because the Four-Star Ball absorbs the blast that should have finished him. For once, Goku cannot keep moving forward by treating the next Red Ribbon obstacle like the last one.
The loss sends him up Korin Tower, where Sacred Water turns out to be training disguised as a shortcut.

Yamcha starts as an enemy. Oolong starts as a local menace. Roshi looks like a ridiculous old man until he casually proves he can erase a mountain. The series is assembling its cast before anybody knows they are going to become a cast.
Episode 13 · The full moon problem
Nobody has an explanation for it. Goku does not even remember what he does in that form. All the audience knows is that his tail and the moon are connected, and that the sweet kid at the center of the show can become something his friends are genuinely afraid of.
One Kid Versus an Army
Open →Muscle Tower → General Blue → Red Ribbon HQ
That mismatch is the joke and the threat at the same time. The army thinks it is running a global operation. Goku keeps walking through increasingly expensive parts of it because the people in charge cannot understand what kind of opponent they have picked.
Kami's Lookout · Adult Goku · A different kind of training
When he returns three years later, the visual joke is immediate: everybody is waiting for the same little kid and a tall young man walks in instead. The growth is not only physical. Goku hides his strength, reads opponents better and wastes far less movement.
Roshi Enters Because Goku Needs to Lose
Open →Jackie Chun · Master as opponent
That makes the final against Goku less about deciding who is strongest and more about Roshi trying to preserve Goku's hunger to improve. He is willing to exhaust himself, destroy the moon, and nearly lose the disguise entirely to make the lesson stick.
Bora dies · Korin becomes necessary
The answer is not a hidden transformation. Goku has to climb Korin Tower and discover that the 'Sacred Water' is basically a trick designed to make him chase somebody he cannot catch. He gets stronger because Korin forces his movement, timing and awareness forward.
Baba's five fighters · The masked final opponent
He knows the tail weakness. He moves like somebody who understands Goku instead of merely fighting him. When the mask comes off, the tournament stops being about winning Baba's help.
A goodbye instead of a power-up
For Goku, who usually processes the world through food, fighting and immediate problems, the reunion is unusually naked emotion. Then Gohan leaves again, because the point is not to restore the old life. It is to let Goku keep going without wondering whether he lost it unfinished.
Tien Changes Sides in Public
Open →The final match is also a break with Master Shen
Goku does not lecture him into becoming better. Roshi gives him an alternative, Goku gives him an opponent worth respecting, and Tien makes the decision himself.
Episode 102 · Goku stops thinking
That failure matters. Goku's instinct has always been to run directly at the problem because being stronger usually makes that reasonable. King Piccolo's story repeatedly punishes that assumption. Roshi dies attempting the Mafuba. Chiaotzu is killed trying to stop Piccolo's wish. Shenron himself is destroyed after granting it.
Piccolo Jr. · Flight · city-level destruction
Then Goku does something the original series has spent years making extraordinary: he flies under his own power to win the match. No Nimbus. No trick. Just Bukujutsu at exactly the moment Piccolo thinks broken limbs have ended the fight.
